New website for Andover Neighbourcare's Silver Surfer service
We are going to be creating a new website for a Hampshire based charity with some basic content management and a focus on usability.
Andover Neighbourcare is an charity based in Andover, Hampshire, which helps the vulnerable and needy in their local area. There have just opened a new service which they have called "Silver Surfers".
This isn't just aimed at the vulnerable but at anyone over the age of 50 in the Andover area. The idea is to help the over 50's get online and learn how to use computers in a safe and comfortable environment. If you have a realative in that age group in the area who can't get to grips with email or using word or excel for example, why not tell them to pop along and see how Silver Surfers can help?
We were approached through a mutual contact to take a look at providing them with a very basic website which they could then add to themselves. We decided that we would provide this for free but, would also give them some basic content management so that any member of their team could update the latest news and events to keep their visitors informed. They're also going to have some template pages from us so that they can add extra pages to the site as they see fit (under our guidance).This is a really nice opportunity to put our skills to good use and do something worthwhile for the community. We all know someone in the target age group who struggles with technology and could maybe benefit from learning how to use email properly and be able to communicate with relatives who live further afield with ease.

Are right hand menu bars and navigation, good or bad?
Opinion on whether right hand navigation (where the menu bar is) on a website is very different across the industry. Some say good, some say bad. We've been involved in a discussion regarding this within the Interactive Design Association recently and thought it may be useful to share some of the thoughts here. Traditionally, navigation has always been across the top of the page or on the left hand side. Now, with wider screens and more interactive websites, there is the opportunity to experiment away from the norm. But, people are used to having the navigation on the left aren't they? So why try and change it?

MSoft refuse to let its browser render emails in html format in Outlook 2010 and are using WORD instead
Microsoft have announced that the rendering engine in Outlook 2010 for html emails (the bit that converts the html to what you see on the screen) is to be the WORD rendering engine and NOT the Internet Explorer rendering engine. We think this is crazy.
